Summary:
In the violent country of Ludania, the classes are strictly divided by the language they speak. The smallest transgression, like looking a member of a higher class in the eye while they are speaking their native tongue, results in immediate execution. Seventeen-year-old Charlaina has always been able to understand the languages of all classes, and she's spent her life trying to hide her secret. The only place she can really be free is the drug-fueled underground clubs where people go to shake off the oppressive rules of the world they live in. It's there that she meets a beautiful and mysterious boy named Max who speaks a language she's never heard before . . . and her secret is almost exposed.
Charlie is intensely attracted to Max, even though she can't be sure where his real loyalties lie. As the emergency drills give way to real crisis and the violence escalates, it becomes clear that Charlie is the key to something much bigger: her country's only chance for freedom from the terrible power of a deadly regime.
Review:
Earlier this summer, I tried reading The Body Finder -which is also by Kimberly Derting. But after a chapter or two, I didn't like how the plot was headed. What I tend to do is that if I've read an author's books before and didn't like it, I will absolutely not read their other series. However, I put this book on hold a long time ago... I didn't think this book would be like:
I WAS WRONG.
I loved every single page of this book. At the beginning you're totally like "I ship Charlie and Aaron" and then you meet the "beautiful and mysterious" Max. Then, it's just "if Charlie and Max don't get together:
Of course there is always an obstacle to overcome, but there are some serious surprises that you will not see coming! Then, when Max and Charlie are being adorable, you literally want to jump up-and-down like this:
Don't even get me started about the plot. There was so much going on, that I could not put this book down! I probably finished this in 2 days. The only thing that stopped me from giving this book 5 "books" was the ending. While reading this book, there were some intense scenes that you could totally see becoming an epic movie shot. So, I was expecting the ending to be very cliff hanger-y, but even though there is a cliff hanger, it wasn't a very good cliff hanger. The cliff hanger seemed like it was just smushed in so that Kimberly Derting could write a next book.
I highly recommend The Pledge to anyone who enjoys dystopians (and even if you don't, you should give this book a go). I'm sure that after you read this, you're next obsession will be Max...
