Summary:
The year is 1876, and there’s something strange and deadly loose in Philadelphia…
Eleanor Fitt has a lot to worry about. Her brother has gone missing, her family has fallen on hard times, and her mother is determined to marry her off to any rich young man who walks by. But this is nothing compared to what she’s just read in the newspaper—
The Dead are rising in Philadelphia.
And then, in a frightening attack, a zombie delivers a letter to Eleanor…from her brother.
Whoever is controlling the Dead army has taken her brother as well. If Eleanor is going to find him, she’ll have to venture into the lab of the notorious Spirit-Hunters, who protect the city from supernatural forces. But as Eleanor spends more time with the Spirit-Hunters, including their maddeningly stubborn yet handsome inventor, Daniel, the situation becomes dire. And now, not only is her reputation on the line, but her very life may hang in the balance.
Review:
Something Strange and Deadly has enough mystery to keep the reader intrigued. The setting seems very realistic; the characters have a very olden edge to their sayings and actions.
There was just enough mystery and action to pull myself through this book. However, even at the end of the book (literally, the last 10 pages) -when there is a full on Dead vs. Spirit-Hunters battle- I still procrastinated on reading this book. Basically, it took me a while to finish this book.
On the cover of the book, there is a quote from Marie Lu's review:
Thrilling, charming, and dark. If you enjoyed Clockwork Angel [by Cassandra Clare], you'll love this.I found that false because the idea of Spirit-Hunters seem to sprout from Cassandra Clare's Shadowhunters. And with such similar names, it's hard to ignore the similarities. Both Shadowhunters and Spirit-Hunters are hidden from the human world (or at least attempted to be hidden).
If you have not read Cassandra Clare's Shadowhunter Chronicles, you might enjoy this book, especially if you have a thing from historical fiction books.
