5 out of 5: THE DARKEST MINDS by Alexandra Bracken

The Darkest Minds (The Darkest Minds #1) by Alexandra Bracken
Summary:
When Ruby woke up on her tenth birthday, something about her had changed. Something alarming enough to make her parents lock her in the garage and call the police. Something that gets her sent to Thurmond, a brutal government “rehabilitation camp.” She might have survived the mysterious disease that’s killed most of America’s children, but she and the others have emerged with something far worse: frightening abilities they cannot control.

Now sixteen, Ruby is one of the dangerous ones.

When the truth comes out, Ruby barely escapes Thurmond with her life. Now she’s on the run, desperate to find the one safe haven left for kids like her—East River. She joins a group of kids who escaped their own camp. Liam, their brave leader, is falling hard for Ruby. But no matter how much she aches for him, Ruby can’t risk getting close. Not after what happened to her parents.

When they arrive at East River, nothing is as it seems, least of all its mysterious leader. But there are other forces at work, people who will stop at nothing to use Ruby in their fight against the government. Ruby will be faced with a terrible choice, one that may mean giving up her only chance at a life worth living.

Review:
First thing I said once I finished this book "I'm going to cry, this book was beautiful." The cover looks very dark and scary -it only has two colours. However, this book had all sorts of emotions packed into just 488 pages.

Alexandra Bracken does a fabulous job to keep the reader engaged. Right of the bat, the reader wants to know what the back-story to Ruby is. Bracken leads the reader on for a good portion of the book. Thankfully, Ruby's story does not disappoint! After learning about Ruby's past, you understand why she has become the person she is. The reader cannot help but love Ruby even more. Even though Ruby is quiet and shy, she slowly transforms into a hero.

Ruby's love interest, Liam, is inexplainable. If everyone was a Liam (Lee), this world would be a better place; Lee sees only the good things in people. He tries to help everyone and naturally, he is a good leader.  When you read this book, you will love Liam's friend, Charles Carrington Meriwether IV -who goes by Chub. He is accidentally funny; Chubs does not intentionally do things to make people laugh, it just so happens that certain things he does, is funny. Just his nickname is an oxymoron to the kind of person he is. Chubs does not want Ruby to join their group (Lee, Zu, and him), but it is only because he cares so much about the group.

Lastly, the action and suspense was amazing! I managed to finish this book in 2 days. As mentioned before, the first mystery of the book is Ruby's back story. Along with her story, the reader is kept on their toes for the back story of Zu, Lee, and Chubs. On top of all that, Ruby and Lee's group is trying to escape from the PSFs from the "rehabilitation camps," and trying to find the East River. Then, as the summary states "nothing is as it seems." Before reading this book, "You too, darlin'" does not mean much, but the ending to The Darkest Minds is unforgettable.
