4.5 out of 5: Underworld by Meg Cabot

Underworld (The Abandon Trilogy #2) by Meg Cabot
Summary:
Escape from the realm of the dead is impossible when someone there wants you back.

Seventeen-year-old Pierce Oliviera isn’t dead.

Not this time.

But she is being held against her will in the dim, twilit world between heaven and hell, where the spirits of the deceased wait before embarking upon their final journey.

Her captor, John Hayden, claims it’s for her own safety. Because not all the departed are dear. Some are so unhappy with where they ended up after leaving the Underworld, they’ve come back as Furies, intent on vengeance…on the one who sent them there and on the one whom he loves.

But while Pierce might be safe from the Furies in the Underworld, far worse dangers could be lurking for her there…and they might have more to do with its ruler than with his enemies.

And unless Pierce is careful, this time there’ll be no escape.

Review:
For starters, I absolutely adore re-writes of Greek mythology, so naturally, I enjoyed the plot of this book very much. And who doesn't love bad a** boys like John Hayden?

I couldn't put this book down once I started. The first book, Abandon, left off with a cliff-hanger. I enjoyed how Meg instantly snaps into the rising action. There is many secrets that the mysterious John Hayden keeps, this was one of the things that kept me reading this book for hours. However, I slightly disappointed  about the big secret reveal; there was a lot of anticipation. Also, Meg tries to put some foreshadowing about John's secret at the beginning of the novel, but I think by doing that, Meg creates too much tension and when the secret is finally revealed, it's not as shocking as it could have been.

Secondly, there are certain times that I feel John is too soft when it comes to Pierce. Meanwhile, there are certain times when Pierce is too forgiving. The main thing that would have made this book a '5' is for a stronger female lead. I understand that a lot of things in Pierce life is changing and she tries her very best to keep everyone she loves safe. Yet, Pierce tends to cry a little too easily.

Meg does a very good job with the ending of this book. I just cuts off, and it's like suddenly you can't breath because you need to find out what happens next! Also, I loved the little bits of humour that are present throughout the book. Nothing better than a funny, exciting, and epic book!
