Summary:
It all began with a ruined elixir and an accidental bolt of lightning…
Iolanthe Seabourne is the greatest elemental mage of her generation—or so she's being told. The one prophesied for years to be the savior of The Realm. It is her duty and destiny to face and defeat the Bane, the greatest mage tyrant the world has ever known. A suicide task for anyone let alone a sixteen-year-old girl with no training, facing a prophecy that foretells a fiery clash to the death.
Prince Titus of Elberon has sworn to protect Iolanthe at all costs but he's also a powerful mage committed to obliterating the Bane to avenge the death of his family—even if he must sacrifice both Iolanthe and himself to achieve his goal.
But Titus makes the terrifying mistake of falling in love with the girl who should have been only a means to an end. Now, with the servants of the Bane closing in, he must choose between his mission and her life.
Review:
When you first read this book, -even if you aren't a fan- Harry Potter just screams out at you. But there is also some She's the Man (the movie) mixed in too. I think that fans of The Mortal Instruments, or Harry Potter will enjoy this book the most.
If the summary hasn't intrigued you enough, read the very first page -not even the first page of the first chapter of the book:
And tell me you aren't intrigued by this awesome prophecy?
We all know about that boy who is so damaged that he just hides all his emotion and never lets the world see the real him. And you know how we always ship the main girl and that guy together? THIS BOOK HAS ONE OF THOSE RELATIONSHIPS and you will ache for poor Prince Titus. I love how this book has really hard and challenging names to pronounce because it makes the characters that much more interesting.
Not only were the characters interesting, but the plot was quiet chaotic. There are 2 points-of-views happening at the exact same time. Near the end/during the epic battle scene, it literally feels like a live feed from each characters point of view. It feels like there is a little clock in the bottom corner of the story ticking away each second. I have no-idea how on earth Thomas managed to keep up with this intricate story line.
The only thing missing from this book was the ending. It was like Prince Titus and Fairfax had killed the 2 "dragons" but not really killing the second "dragon". For a first book in a series, I would have liked to see more of a cliff hanger in the book. Still, it's a great book! I bid you good luck with all the feels.
