Summary:
It’s been six weeks since angels of the apocalypse descended to demolish the modern world. Street gangs rule the day while fear and superstition rule the night. When warrior angels fly away with a helpless little girl, her seventeen-year-old sister Penryn will do anything to get her back.
Anything, including making a deal with an enemy angel.
Raffe is a warrior who lies broken and wingless on the street. After eons of fighting his own battles, he finds himself being rescued from a desperate situation by a half-starved teenage girl.
Traveling through a dark and twisted Northern California, they have only each other to rely on for survival. Together, they journey toward the angels’ stronghold in San Francisco where she’ll risk everything to rescue her sister and he’ll put himself at the mercy of his greatest enemies for the chance to be made whole again.
Review:
I was hesitant to pick up this book. After seeing this book in person, I thought it was too thin to contain a decent and exciting story, but boy did Susan Ee prove me wrong. The size of the book creates a positive impact; the plot immediately starts on the first page of the book. It's a bit distorting at the beginning because you feel like running around and screaming "What is going on?!?" but, that feeling quickly transforms into please don't let Raffe die. There is never a dull moment in this book.
I must have looked crazy while reading this outside because the end just explodes with surprises, my mouth was probably hanging open for a good portion of the ending. I also had one of those there's-not-enough-pages-for-everything-that-needs-to-happen moments. Only 8 months until the next book!
Although the two love interests are predictable, the length they go to save each other is not. Of course, this causes more heart break (yours and the characters). Susan does a really good job of describing a spooky, haunting, and tragic scene at the end.
This book received more than 4 000 five-star reviews and I feel like it truly does deserve all -possibly more- of those five-stars.
